43 - ride (step by step)
it’s time for another step by step post! this time for the piece i just finished with the amazingly creative title “ride”. it’s actually not really the title title, just so i can find the file in the depths of my archive.
i will also try and link the previous step by step posts to the finished works on my website. or will i?
so this is the original sketchbook drawing. i made this in… 2022 i think? every now and then i try to collect some drawings from the sketchbooks for future reference.
this is step 2, where i basically just took the composition the sketchbook drawing had and scribbled it down. i also thought about what i would like to add (see here: other horses apparently and also another riding person. plus i thought i would include the funky birds).
lol! this took quite a lot of time because i had to do so many things at once. i knew i didn’t want the kind of cliché character setup the sketchbook drawing had. so i sort of went bit by bit (step by step, gasp) - it started with the coat thing the person is wearing, then i realized i really don’t care about horses all that much… anyway, it’s a bit hard to summarize but it was a lot of spontaneous worldbuilding. which was fun but also made my brain melt a little, because much energy was spent.
when you scroll one image up again and compare that drawing to this drawing you might notice how the person in the previous drawing is sitting a bit lower on the creature. in fact, too low. so this drawing here had the exact same mistake. the way the person sat on the creature didn’t look convincing at all. more like they were sticking to its side. i tried to ignore it but of course couldn’t, so i summoned all my skills and fixed it digitally. now it looks ok, i think, at least as good as it gets.
and on to the final illustration…
i hope this was enjoyable :—)
